In the Dog Dish: Scrappie Dog Food

Y'all, life gets chaotic and you run out of dog food. It happens. That's when Scrappie Dog Food comes in handy.

You can make dog food out of pretty much any combo you have in your fridge, but my favorite dishes are where my hubby gets his panties in a wad that I call it dog food. Scrappie Dog Food is one of those dishes. On with the chow!

I started with raiding the veggie drawer. I generally have carrots and apples since they are Princess Pea's favorite. So I grabbed these first. Then I checked the freezer to see what goodies I had hiding in there. Peas, score!

We have a lot of round steak and minute round steak in our freezer. Apparently, our kids don't like it. Usually we make it when I have leftovers the kids will it, but after getting so many pounds of beef the last couple of years it tends to stock up. Check out Minute Steak Dog Fry for round steak yumminess.

Lets start with ingredients. You can feed almost any fruit or veggie to your pups. This recipe calls for...

cumin, wheat germ, + round steak

rice; 1 cup uncooked

On with the cooking!

I always use coconut oil or real butter in my recipes. Everyone can use real, good fat. I cook on cast iron so coconut oil is preferred. If you use any other kind of pan you can use one or the other or both.

Start with a hot cast iron pan and a spoon full of coconut oil. Then toss in your apples and carrots.

After the apples and carrots have been cooked for a while, until they change color, add in the cumin and wheat germ. I decided the last minute to throw in some rosemary as well.

While the fruits and veggies are cooking make your rice. I usually make about a cup of uncooked rice. Once it is cooked, throw in about 1 tbsp. of real butter and stir it in the rice.

Then throw in the round steak {I use kitchen scissors to cut it in pieces} into the skillet with the sauté mixture. Cook the meat until it is mostly browned, then throw in your peas.

Finish cooking the ingredients altogether while your rice cools. If it seems to be too dry at any point add more butter or coconut oil. After the meat is completely browned, put the skillet to the side and let it cool.

Now your ready to plate your Scrappie Dog Food! I always like to put the rice on the bottom. It adds a nice base for the color of the dish. That and the pups are going to dig for that juicy meat so why make it hard for them.
