In the Dog Dish: Chicken Veggie Medley
I left my baby. My little DeeDee that is. I left her Sunday and I can't imagine how she is taking it. I am on vacation with my mom. No (grand)kids. No husbands. YAY!! So in preparation for my absence, this is the first time she will be away from me, I am making dog food. Y'all dogs don't like to eat when their people are gone. I am sharing with you today Chicken Veggie Medley, a grain free option for your pampered pooches.
Chicken Veggie Medley
- 8 cups water
- 4 chicken legs
- 3 stalks of celery
- 1/2 tsp. garlic
- 1 tsp rosemary
- 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
- 4 carrots, grated
- 1 medium apple, finely chopped
- 1 cup shredded spinach
- 3/4 cup peas
- 2 tbsp. wheat germ
First, boil your chicken in the water with the celery, garlic, and rosemary about 30 minutes. Let sit in pot for a few minutes. While this is cooking you can prep your veggies.
Second, pull the chicken out of the pot and place in strainer over a bowl to cool. While cooling pull out the celery and discard however you wish. I give my veggie leftovers to my chickens. Also pull out 2 cups of the liquid. You can keep and freeze this as a broth or poor over dry dog food later.
Third, pull apart your chicken and place in the remaining 6 cups of liquid in your pot. Add the bell pepper, carrots, and apple to the pot. Bring this to boil the reduce to simmer, stirring occasionally until carrots are soft. The smaller the carrot piece the less time it will take. Then add your spinach, peas, and wheat germ. You only need about 5-10 minutes for the spinach and peas otherwise they get too mushy.
Fourth, remove pot from heat and let in thoroughly cool before feeding to you dogs. We don't want burnt mouths because they don't have self-control. When cool plate and serve!
